Top Thrill Dragster vs. Kingda Ka

Ever since the unveiling of Kingda Ka, there has been a great debate to figure out which is better- Top Thrill Dragster or Kingda Ka. I'm not writing this to settle the debate, but to let you decide.

Stats:

Kingda Ka-

Max height: 456 feet
Max speed: 128 Mph
2nd hill height: 129 feet
Acceleration: 0-128 in 3.5 seconds
Restraints: Over shoulder

Top Thrill Dragster-

Max height: 420 feet
Max speed: 120 mph
Acceleration: 0-120 in 3 seconds
Restraints: Lap bar

Although it may seem that everyone would think Kingda Ka is better, just because of a few more feet and mph, its definitely not true. Personally, I've only been on TTD, and it was simply unbelievable. After talking firsthand with many friends who have been on Kingda Ka, they say the same. After watching countless POV and offride Kingda Ka videos, there a few things I've noticed that set the two rides apart. When riding TTD, with those few precious moments at the top, you get a breathtaking wiew of the park's other coasters, such as Millennium Force, and of course the expansive lake that surrounds Cedar Point. It seems that Kingda Ka's equivalent is not comparable, just simply concrete and trees. Another important factor is the restraints. On Kingda Ka, you are securly held in by over-shoulder restraints, while on TTD, you are free to move with just a simple lap bar. This truly gives the illusion of danger and falling out. Theming actually plays a big role in these coasters. Kingda Ka's "Golden Kingdom" jungle theming is certainly effective, but nothing wery special was done with the trains, just a little coloring and a design on the front. Top Thrill Dragster's name tells it all. The pure acceleration of a top fuel dragster. With its bright racing "christmas tree" adding to the suspense, you sit in your dragster-shaped train, spoiler and all, readly to race down the dragstrip when the light hits green.

Kinga Ka Or Top Thrill Dragster? It's your call.

  1. kingda ka, definitely. Just the bigger height and faster speed and extra hill makes the difference.
The restraints you don't feel at all and just mean people of many different sizes can ride safely without being turned down. I road ttd. I have to say it was less bumpier though.
Watching a large women being turned down from a ride with her child because of her size was very heart breaking. They turned her down and said that the child must ride alone. The kid looked SO terrified. Poor kid. The mom walked away VERY embarrassed and on the verge of crying.
Thats when i noticed why kingda ka was reinvented with shoulder restraints. Its a very smart idea. You don't feel the restraints on kingda ka though. Only if you are REALLY big then you can feel them press against you.
Its very smart that they put them there but also made a big gap between the rider and the restraint. It gives and even greater feeling of "im not strapped in right!"
As for the theme. I must say i like ttd's theme a little better. But what six flags has done is brilliant too.
Not only did they make kingda ka themed around India/africa tiger jungle style, they designated a whole side of the park to it.
While walking to kingda ka, you enter a part of the park called The Golden Kingdom. There, they have a little zoo with white tigers and exotic animals on display behind glass.
They have little play grounds for kids themed the same as kingda ka. Everything in that part of the part is designated to the whole Indian kingda ka theme. From the food stands to the benches.
I have to say kingda was really reinvented on the reactions from ttd. Maybe people in cedar point wanted more and felt that certain things needed a change. Thus kingda ka was born.
Personal favorite, OBVIOUSLY Kingda Ka. Its just and overall better and smarter plan then ttd. But they really did reinvent ttd to kingda ka to satisfy the needs of all.

P.S.- Kingda ka was invented by the SAME EXACT person that designed ttd. So stop saying that six flags COPIED cedar point. When really, the creator sold his plans to six flags. Six flags was interested based on the popularity and all the buzz ttd received.

  3. Kingda ka lets you see more than some rides a lake and trees it lets you see philly and new york. Kingda Ka could also be faster, but it actually wants to slow down AND get over the top of the hill. Unlike a certain ride that rarely makes it over and has so many roll backs that they might as well make it go up and back down.

    1. Im biased cuz I work for cedar point but dragster all the way. Being able to fully put your hands up without a harness blocking you is just incredible. And the sound it makes, the engine revving as you head for the sky. Nothing quite like it. And in the end, the lake and other rides are far easier to make out at that speed than a distant skyline. Nothing against six flags. To a point, a rollercoaster is a rollercoaster and a park is a park but its dragster for me

  4. I read somewhere Cedar point was offered Kingda Ka (the faster and higher design) first, but they didnt have the space for it, so maybe six flags didn't copy Cedar Point.
